Free Secure DNS servers

For those of you who don't know what DNS is, think of it as a phone book that uses IP addresses rather than phone numbers. Anytime you type a website into your browser, DNS is what looks up that name and converts it to an IP address. There are quite a few freely available DNS servers out there, but I am simply going to share a few that I recommend.

If you have more than one computer, you would probably save quite a bit of time entering the DNS servers into your DHCP server (likely your router if this is for home). If you only have a single computer, you can just enter these DNS servers locally on your computer itself to override what is set by DHCP.

Comodo

I have been using Comodo Secure DNS servers for quite some time now. They are fast and reliable.

Google

There's not much to say here. It's Google. I probably use this the most simply because it is so easy to remember the IP addresses.

Norton

I haven't actually tried this one yet, but it seems to be well-liked, so here it is.

ScrubIT

This one is a little different. It's primary purpose is content filtering. If you have kids using your computers, you might consider using this DNS service. It's a quick and easy way to block the objectionable content that is out there. The one drawback is it's not customizable. What's blocked is blocked and what's not is not. They do, however accept suggestions and requests. As a footnote though, I have never had a false positive with this service. They do a good job of that.
